Papercut

Black Leaf on Green Background by MatisseThis week’s theme is Papercut. No, don’t think ouch; this week will be painless (I hope!) as we draw inspiration from papercutting, the art of cutting paper designs. · This week’s theme inspired by Elsa Mora (hmm, a bit more involved than the paper dolls or snowflakes you may have cut out as a kid, no?) · History of papercutting. · And I would certainly be remiss if I didn’t mention Henri Matisse, the well-known French artist who turned to paper cutting later on in his life when his health began to deteriorate.

The paper cutouts allow me to draw with color. For me, it is a simplification. Instead of drawing an outline and then filling in with color – with one modifying the other – I draw directly in color… It is not a starting point, it is a completion. Henri Matisse (1869-1954),
describing the technique he
called “painting with scissors”)
