I know I shouldn’t be ashamed of this, but I am: my normal process is sketch an idea then trace over and over until I get it to look exactly how I want it. It seems very stone age to me. I keep wondering to myself, ‘Who really buys tracing paper anymore?’ But I recently got a lot of positive responses on an illo that had lots of rough lines and was imperfect, so I decided to try it again. Rough linework and imperfect coloring is out of my comfort zone.

My comfort zone has always been COLOR. I find myself working with bright jewel tones because people have reacted so strongly (positively) to them. So going out of that comfort zone was to create a “zentangle,” which is limited to BLACK & WHITE. It was well worth stepping out of my usual box.
